How Do Solar Panels Work? Guide for Australian Homes
Ask ten neighbours how do solar panels work and most will say, "they turn sunlight into power." That's true, but it skips the interesting part: what happens to that power next, and why it matters for your bill. According to the Clean Energy Council (CEC), at the end of June 2026 about one in 2.5 Australian homes had rooftop solar and about one in seven had a battery. This guide explains the whole journey in plain English, then shows where a home battery fits in.
How Do Solar Panels Work? The Basics
From sunlight to electricity
Most household panels are solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Each panel is a set of silicon cells. When sunlight hits a cell, it knocks electrons loose, and the cell's built-in electric field pushes them in one direction. That flow is electricity. The CEC's consumer guide notes that the electricity panels produce is direct current (DC). It also points out that PV panels are different from solar hot water systems, which use the sun's heat rather than converting light into electricity.
What the inverter does
Your home runs on alternating current (AC), so the DC from your roof needs converting. That is the job of the inverter, usually mounted near your switchboard. Think of it as the translator between your roof and your home. A hybrid inverter does the same job but also manages a battery, which matters later in this guide.
Where the power goes
Your home uses solar power first. Any surplus is exported to the grid, and your retailer may pay you a feed-in tariff for it. When your panels aren't producing enough, you draw from the grid as usual. The CEC's household guide covers feed-in tariffs and grid connection as part of the buying process.
Cloudy days and blackouts
Panels still generate on cloudy days, just less. A standard grid-connected system switches off during a blackout, which is a safety feature that protects line workers. If you want power during an outage, you need a battery with a hybrid inverter set up for backup.
Getting a system that suits your home
There is no one-size-fits-all system. The CEC guide walks buyers through system size, panel type, roof angle and finding an accredited installer. It also recommends using a CEC Approved Solar Retailer, which means a company that has signed the solar industry's code of conduct.
HYXiPOWER Batteries and Systems
Why add a battery to solar
Without a battery, your surplus solar goes to the grid in the middle of the day, and you buy power back in the evening. A battery stores that surplus so you can use it after sunset. Run the numbers for your own home with our battery ROI calculator.
The HYXiPOWER range at a glance
HYXiPOWER is a Chinese clean energy company that debuted its all-in-one energy storage systems in Australia at the All Energy exhibition in Melbourne in 2025. Its residential range includes hybrid inverters, stackable high-voltage batteries and all-in-one storage systems. The company received an EUPD Top Innovation Storage Award 2025 for Australia. We install HYXiPOWER systems, and you can read more on our HYXiPOWER page.
Does a HYXiPOWER battery suit your home?
A HYXiPOWER high-voltage battery must be paired with a compatible hybrid inverter. It can be added to a new solar system or retrofitted to an existing one, depending on your current inverter. Battery eligibility for government incentives depends on the specific model and installation, so we confirm this for every quote rather than assume it.
Why a Solar Battery Is a Good Fit for Australia
Australia already leads in rooftop solar
The CEC's Rooftop Solar and Storage Report for January to June 2026 recorded 180,878 new rooftop solar systems, 35% more than the same period in 2025 and the strongest half-year since 2021. Households also added a record amount of battery storage. The CEC says battery incentives are drawing new solar installs with them, and that many homes are adding batteries to existing systems. More homes with solar means more midday surplus and more reason to store it.
Use more of the power you generate
Solar peaks at midday, but most households use the most power in the evening. A battery bridges that gap by shifting your own generation into the hours you need it.
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Since 1 July 2025, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program has given eligible households an upfront discount on home batteries through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), using small-scale technology certificates (STCs). The discount is designed to be around 30% on average, but it is not fixed. From 1 May 2026 the STC factor dropped to 6.8 per usable kWh and the discount tapers as battery size increases. The factor is scheduled to step down further over time, so when you install affects what you receive. Eligibility conditions apply, and we explain them in our 2026 rebate guide.
