HOW THE REBATE WORKS?
The federal battery discount is calculated based on your battery’s eligible usable capacity. For many households, this can reduce the upfront cost of an eligible battery system by thousands of dollars.
From 1 May 2026, the program uses a tiered structure designed to spread support across more Australian homes. The first 14 kWh of eligible usable capacity receives the highest level of support, capacity between 14–28 kWh receives a reduced rate, and capacity between 28–50 kWh receives a further reduced rate.
The government also uses an STC factor to calculate the incentive, which gradually decreases over time. This means the value available for your system can depend on when your eligible battery is installed and certified.
Choosing the right battery size can make a significant difference to both your available incentive and long-term energy savings. Our Blacktown team can help you understand how the current rules apply to your home and choose a battery system that suits your energy needs.
SOLAR & BATTERY INCENTIVES EXPLAINED
Australia has federal and state-based programs designed to help reduce the cost of eligible solar battery installations. These aren't always traditional cash rebates-the benefit may instead be delivered through certificates that have a monetary value.
NSW
Peak Demand Reduction Scheme
Delivered through PRCs
A NSW Government scheme under the Energy Security Safeguard, delivered as Peak Reduction Certificates (PRCs). For households this is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) connection incentive — it requires you to sign up with an approved VPP provider, who passes the certificate value through to you. It is not a fixed government payment, and the amount varies by provider and battery size.
FEDERAL
Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Delivered through STCs
Cheaper Home Batteries Program (CHBP) Delivered through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), administered by the Clean Energy Regulator. This is an upfront discount applied directly to your invoice — you don't apply for it separately, and it isn't a cash rebate or tax refund. Eligible systems must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh nominal capacity, and the battery must be paired with new or existing rooftop solar. The discount amount is set by the STC Factor on the date your battery is installed, so the figure in your quote is an estimate until installation is complete.
